CONVENTUS’17: Contending Innovation against Obsolescence

“Artificial intelligence would be the ultimate version of Google. The ultimate search engine that would understand everything on the web. It would understand exactly what you wanted, and it would give you the right thing. We’re nowhere near doing that now. However, we can get incrementally closer to that, and that is basically what we work on.” — Larry Page

Conventus’17, the Annual Management Conclave of IMI, New Delhi which was held from 18th to 20th August, 2017, concluded with students gaining in depth knowledge about the A.I., Big Data and the impact these have on the current management scenario. The theme of the conclave was, “Big Data, Artificial Intelligence & Robotics: Leading Innovation towards Obsolescence”, with various clubs coming together to organize summits, with various sub themes revolving around the main theme.

With clubs showing various facets of changes occurring in modern times with respect to their domains, it was an enriching experience for students to get a holistic approach on the topics such as, financial disruptions, workforce analytics, Luddite fallacy, business intelligence, etc. to name a few. The speakers laid stress on the fact that innovation is the key component, since the world is changing at a rapid pace. The speakers’ cognizance regarding the fact that it was imperative for the future managers to be competent, was explicit, and advised to develop a skill set which adhered to the rapid changes in innovation, for if the young managers don’t, they may miss the bus and fall behind in this competitive world. India, being a developing country, with job opportunities at a premium, it may well be that the country’s labour force may face the fear of losing their jobs to robots and cutting-edge technologies in the near future. As Mr. Rajarshi Pandit, Co-Founder, Ank Analytics mentioned, “We must ask a question to ourselves of what skill sets we require to be part of the innovation web”.

There is hope still, as mentioned by other speakers, as they still staunchly believed that the human aspect in any form of involvement in business wouldn’t become redundant. “Digitization is important but the aspect of human touch in the way we operate will never go away” – Ms. Smriti Krishna Singh, Chief Human Resources Officer at Sony Pictures Networks India. As we move ahead along the road of progression and digitization, new jobs will be created through new avenues and opportunities.

Conventus’17 brought the students, the reality of today, that is ‘the only constant is change’ and with such changing times we must change ourselves or risk being obsolete as technology is advancing every second. So, the biggest challenge in modern times for a modern manager is to keep up with the technology, and stay modern.
